YOUR GUIDED TOUR OF GHANA

Over fourteen days, your group will embark on a trip that combines the past, the present and the future of Ghana, the gateway to Africa! You will delve into a unique African culture that will stir your emotions, curiosity, and passion. Ghana has a rich history that weaves through ancient Africa, from the intricacies of the slave trade to the struggle for independence and, the trials and tribulations of surviving as a modern nation-state in an increasingly global economy. You will explore the modern city of Accra with its plush hotels and beaches, the castles of Cape Coast and Elmina, and the capital city of the ancient Ashanti empire – Kumasi. You will discover the unspoiled beauty of the famous Mole Wild Game Reserve in Damango, the capital city of Northern Ghana – Tamale, and Paga where you can take pictures with Crocodiles in their natural habitat.  You will also visit the Estuary at Ada where the popular Volta River meets the Atlantic Ocean along the eastern part of Ghana.

Day 1: Departure from Canada
From the Central Station in Ottawa, Ontario, we will travel by bus to Montreal, Quebec where we will board a KLM international flight at Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal, Quebec. We will to arrive in Amsterdam in the morning before continuing onto Ghana.

Day 2: Arrive in Accra, Ghana
If you started the tour in Canada, the KLM international flight continuing from Amsterdam will arrive in Accra in the evening at Kotoka International Airport. You will transfer by chartered bus to your hotel in Accra for your first night, where you will have dinner and time to relax and prepare for your tour of Ghana.

Day 3: Accra City Tour
Explore the city of Accra filled with local activity and exciting history. This historical city tour will take you to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the National Cultural Center, and Independence Square. Breakfast and dinner will be provided at your hotel in Accra.

Day 4: Elmina and Kakum Tour
After breakfast, you will depart Accra for Cape Coast for a guided tour of the Elmina Castle – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will continue to the Kakum National Park to discover the rain forest as a natural habitat for a number of animals including monkeys and elephants, and travel along the Canopy walkway, a popular attraction consisting of seven bridges extending 330 meters (1,000 feet) in length and hangs 30 meters (150 feet) above the ground. You will have dinner and overnight in Cape Coast.

Day 5: Cape Coast Castle and Beach
You will visit the Cape Coast Castle – a special attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by USA President Barack Obama and the First Family on July 11, 2009, Canada’s Governor General Michaelle Jean, former USA President Bill Clinton and former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien.  Some time will be spent at the beach. You will have breakfast, dinner, and overnight in Cape Coast.

Day 6: Travel to Kumasi
You travel to the Ashanti region and spend part of the day in the city of Kumasi, visiting the Manhyia Palace and museums. You will have breakfast, dinner, and overnight in Kumasi.

Day 7: Departure to Damango
After breakfast in Kumasi, you will continue your tour to Damango to visit the Mole Wild Game Reserve.  The evening will be spent at the largest wildlife park in Ghana – where you can catch an upfront view of forest elephants, baboons, monkeys, and other exotic animals in their natural habitat. You will have dinner and overnight in Damongo.

Day 8: Mole Wild Game Reserve Safari Tour
After breakfast we visit an observatory where you can witness the behavior of wild animals based on their own social order of the jungle. You continue to explore the rest of the Reserve on a safari, where you get to see the animals up close. The safari come to an end when we continue to the city of Tamale, where you will have dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Tamale City Tour
Explore the city of Tamale including some of the scenes in the local market, an ideal place where you can test you bargaining skills while shopping. An early return to your hotel will include dinner, entertainment, and overnight.

Day 10: Bolgatanga and Paga Tour
Travel north from Tamale to Bolgatanga and onto Paga, a town that borders Ghana and Burkina Faso. At Paga you can get up close to crocodiles and take photographs while holding their tails. You will meet with a group of locals who will describe and demonstrate how they defended themselves during the raids by the Samori and Babatu during the slave trade. You will see some of the ancient structures and observe some os the tactics that were used to thwart their enemies. You will then return to Tamale for dinner and to overnight.

Day 11: Return to Kumasi
After breakfast, depart Tamale for Kumasi via Kintampo with a brief stop at the Kintampo Waterfalls. We will have dinner and overnight at a hotel in Kumasi.

Day 12: Return to Accra via Kofordua
After breakfast we will visit the Kumasi Cultural Centre where you can observe the construction of talking drums, fabric weaving, and artists at work. You can continue your gift shopping before we depart Kumasi for Accra. This trip will take you through Koforidua where you visit Aburi Botanical Gardens to learn a little about its history and its large variety of plant species. Continue to Accra for dinner and to overnight.

Day 13: Accra City Walk and Visit to Ada
Depart Accra in the morning traveling east to Ada to visit the popular Estuary and the beach. Enjoy a short boat ride up the river. Later in the afternoon, spend time at the beach for some relaxation. Dinner and hotel accommodation in Ada.

Day 14: Free day in Accra
Return to Accra and spend the day at your leisure for last minute shopping and packing. Your morning will be spent at the popular Arts & Crafts Market in the city of Accra Dinner and overnight in Accra.

Day 15: Depart Accra, Ghana
The morning will be spent at La Beach or Coco Beach where you can enjoy the scenery, relax, or the sea water and sand. In the evening you will transfer from your hotel to Kotoka International Airport where you will depart Ghana.

Day 16: Tour Amsterdam (Bonus)
During the seven hour layover in Amsterdam, you will go on a quick city tour and a boat ride before you continue you onward journey on KLM Airlines.
